Farmers Care and Demand a Safe Milk Supply
U.S. dairy farmers have a history of environmental stewardship and are committed now more than ever to preserving the earth’s natural resources. They are passionate for wholesome foods, well-cared for animals and the land they call home. This passion translates into the milk they produce, meaning farmers are 100% confident in the products they bring to the consumer.
There are countless choices in the dairy case, but with claims such as organic and antibiotic-free, how do you know what to choose? The good news is that all milk, as long as it is pasteurized, is wholesome, safe and nutritious.
| Organics | Strict government standards ensure that both conventionally produced and organic milk are equally safe and nutritious. The USDA and American Dietetic Association agree — both types of milk contain the same unique package of nutrients. Plus, most consumers say there is little to no taste difference. |
| Antibiotics | Milk and dairy products are among the most stringently regulated foods in this country. Some cows need antibiotics when sick, but are not allowed to re-enter the milking herd until the antibiotics have cleared their system. Any milk that tests positive for antibiotics is immediately discarded and never available for human consumption. |
| Growth Hormone | All milk, even organic, naturally contains very small amounts of hormones. The FDA has concluded there is no significant difference between the milk from cows that are treated with growth hormone (rbST) and milk from cows that are not treated with rbST. The hormone levels of milk from cows that are treated with rbST are within the normal range. |
The claims seen in the supermarket are a result of milk companies’ response to consumer requests for choices in the dairy aisle. The availability of these options is not related to any health or safety issue.
